17-19 czerwca GRAPE miało zaszczyt być gospodarzem Gender Gaps Conference 2021. Chcielibyśmy podziękować wszystkim uczestnikom za trzy dni intensywnych dyskusji o nierównościach względem płci z perspektywy niemal wszystkich nauk społecznych. Najlepszym dowodem na żywiołowość dyskusji, jest to, jak ciężko było utrzymać komentarze w wyznaczonych ramach czasowych!

Mieliśmy dwa wspaniałe wykłady przewodnie. Andrea Weber (Uniwersytet Środkowoeuropejski) rozważała czy więcej kobiet w radzie nadzorczej danej spółki przekłada się na lepsze perspektywy kobiet pracujących na wysokich stanowiskach. Używając włoskich danych, Andrea pokazała, że korzyści dla kobiet są pomijalne. Najwyraźniej reformowanie spółek “od góry” nie zmienia zakorzenionych praktyk na dole drabiny.  Drugiego dnia, Julia McQuillian (Uniwersytet Nebraski) przedstawiła podsumowanie swoich doświadczeń w walce z nierównościami ze względu na płeć na swoim uniwersytecie. Wykład pokazał jakie mechanizmy mogą stać za wynikami badań Andrei Weber.  

Obejrzyj i posłuchaj głównych prelegentek i Komitetu Naukowego

Podczas konferencji przyznaliśmy nagrodę za najlepsze badanie dla doktorantów, które powędrowało do Anniki Bacher (Europejski Instytut Uniwersytecki). Jej artykuł eksploruje w jaki sposób decyzje inwestycyjne różnią się między kobietami a mężczyznami podczas cyklu życia. Używając zaawansowanych metod ekonometrycznych, Annika pokazuje, że to różnice w okolicznościach (a nie preferencjach czy awersji do ryzyka) przekładają się na inne decyzje inwestycyjne kobiet. Gratulacje i podziękowania za świetne wystąpienie! Nie możemy doczekać się, żeby przeczytać opublikowaną wersję badania.

Jakość nadesłanych prac przerosła nasze oczekiwania. W rezultacie komitet naukowy zdecydował się wyróżnić dodatkowe prace doktoranckie, które w znaczący sposób poszerzają naszą wiedzę o nierównościach względem płci. Autorami tych prac są:

On 17th-19th June, GRAPE hosted the Gender Gaps Conference 2021. We would like to warmly thank all attendees for these 3 days of insightful discussions on gender inequality.  The discussion extended well beyond the allocated time slots, which speaks volumes about the quality of presentations and how interesting discussions were! :)  

We had two amazing keynote lectures. On the first day, Andrea Weber (Central European University) discussed whether having more women in corporate boards improved the career prospects of other senior women in the company. Using Italian data, Andrea showed that benefits were marginal at best. Apparently, reforms at the head are not sufficient to address the existing organizational practices. On the second day, Julia McQuillan (University of Nebraska) provided a more personal keynote on the difficulties faced at her university on the road to achieve gender equality in academia, providing an insider perspective on the possible mechanisms behind Andrea’s findings.

During the conference, we awarded Annika Bacher the prize for the best Phd paper. Her article explores how investment decisions over the life-cycle differ between men and women. Using state of the art econometric tools, she identifies differences in circumstances (and not risk aversion or preferences), as standing behind women’s investment decisions. Annika is a PhD student at European University Institute. Congratulations and big thank you for the wonderful presentation, Annika! We hope to read the published version soon. 

The quality of presented papers exceeded all our (already high) initial expectations. In consequence, the scientific committee decided to recognize the work of three additional PhD students, whose contributions are pushing the knowledge frontier further:

• Ingrid Haegele (UC Berkeley)

• Mathias Fjællegaard Jensen (Copenhagen Business School),
